UoA Medicine Entry 2028: What's Changing?
From 2028 entry, the University of Auckland removes the UCAT from MBChB selection. GPA becomes a pass/fail threshold (6.0, a B+ average) instead of a weighted score. Applicants who pass are then ranked 50% on the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) and 50% on Casper.
Last updated: 5 October 2026
What is being removed?
The UCAT is no longer part of selection. The current cohort (2027 entry) is ranked on a combined UCAT, GPA and MMI score. From 2028 entry, UCAT is removed entirely.
How does GPA work now?
GPA is a pass/fail threshold rather than a weighting. You need a GPA of at least 6.0 (B+ average) across the 4 core first-year courses: BIOSCI 107, CHEM 190, POPLHLTH 111 and MEDSCI 142, with no grade below B in any of your 8 first-year courses. Clearing the threshold does not guarantee an interview, because invitations are issued in ranked order.
How are applicants ranked?
| Component | 2027 entry | 2028 entry |
|---|---|---|
| UCAT | Weighted | Removed |
| GPA | Weighted | Pass/fail threshold (6.0) |
| MMI | Weighted | 50% of ranking |
| Casper | Not used | 50% of ranking |
How many pathways are there into premed?
