The UoA MMI, Explained.
The Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) is a compulsory interview stage for University of Auckland MBChB applicants, and for other clinical programmes including BOptom, BPharm, BMedImag(Hons), MAud and MND. It applies to applicants who clear the academic threshold. For 2028 entry it carries more weight than ever: it is now 50% of final selection, up from 25%.
Why the MMI matters more now.
The selection formula changed for 2028 entry. Here is the before and after.
- GPA60%
- UCAT15%
- MMI25%
- GPAPass/fail threshold
- UCATRemoved
- MMI50%
- Casper50%
Once you clear the GPA threshold, 100% of your ranking comes down to two things: the MMI and Casper.
The GPA threshold for 2028 entry is a 6.0 (B+ average) across the 4 core first-year courses: BIOSCI 107, CHEM 190, POPLHLTH 111 and MEDSCI 142, with no grade below B in any of the 8 first-year courses.
Who needs to do it.
A short checklist of what has to be true before an interview invite is possible.
Achieve GPA ≥ 6.0 across the 4 core first-year courses
No grade below B in any of your 8 first-year courses
Complete the UoA Casper situational judgement test in your year of application
Be shortlisted and ranked to receive an interview invitation (an interview isn't automatic just for clearing the threshold, invites go out in ranked order)
How the MMI actually works.
What happens on the day, and what you need to have ready.
Delivered online via the Kira Talent platform, asynchronous video-recorded format.
8 total stations, each 3.5 minutes: 30 seconds to read the scenario, then 3 minutes to respond on camera.
7 of the 8 stations are scored (one per domain); the 8th is a non-scored admin and ID-verification station.
All applicants sit the MMI at the same scheduled time, in a single simultaneous sitting.
Requirements: laptop or computer with webcam and mic (no phones), stable internet, a quiet private room, and valid photo ID.
Closed-book interview: no notes, books, phones or smart watches allowed. Applicants get an individual Kira Talent link and a chance to test the platform beforehand.

Only 3 of the 8 are assessed per station, and you won't know which, so all 8 matter across the full interview.
